Marble or Granite? Choosing the Right Countertop
Mostly it has been observed that the people who love to cook are very meticulous about their kitchen. After all, since is where they spend most of their time, every little detail should be perfect. The kitchen countertop can be said to be among the center pieces of a kitchen. Many home owners therefore carefully consider what material they would use. Although different materials are available like Formica and ceramic tiles, most home owners would choose granite and marble simply for their beauty.
You may find these countertops in every second house these days. The popularity of granite and marble countertops has increased due to the development in kitchen countertop fabrication. With the help of modern technology, they have become more affordable. The home owner therefore does not only enjoy the benefit of beauty and elegance of the stones. The resiliency of marble and granite countertops would prove cost effective over time because they do not have to be repaved and re-laid every so often. The question that remains to be answered then is choosing between the two.
While granite is made of molten magma, marble on the other hand is made of limestone. Both stones are made of minerals. Granite is composed of feldspar, quartz, and black mica while marble is only composed of calcite.
No doubt that marble is softer compared to granite, and therefore prone to stains and scratches. Intense heat can dull it surface. It also reacts to acidic materials so one must take care not to spill acidic liquid like vinegar on its surface. There are those however who prefer marble countertops despite its susceptibility to stains and scratches. Italians for instance believe that these do not diminish but rather enhance the natural beauty of the stone.
Granite on the other hand is the second hardest stone whose beauty is revealed through polishing. It does not fade and is almost maintenance free. Moreover, it is resistant to bacteria and easy to clean " a definite plus for a kitchen countertop. It can resist high temperatures so one does not have to worry about burns from hot pans and pots. As long as it is properly installed, granite countertops are almost unbreakable.
Both granite and marble however are valued for the ambience it creates in a room. The splendour of their patterns, colours and designs are simply unmatched by synthetic materials. Their ability to withstand wear and tear through time makes them a good investment in homes.
