Granite counter top may seem intimidating to install. But no matter how daunting the task of doing it proves, I can assure you that it is what can be done. Its installation is similar to ceramic tiles, involving similar instruments, material and methods; however it can never be cut the way ceramic tiles are scored, its hardness requires for a more sophisticated and strong tool which will beat it at its own hardness: the diamond tile saw.
You will have to begin the installation by removing the previous counter top. This should be done by first evaluating the way it was fixed previously. If is by screws, it can be easily unscrewed from the top of the counter, but if it is adhered by glue, you will need a flat bar to get it off the surface. To have to ensure that the job is done cautiously, from under the surface, which is through under the cabinet so that the finish is not destroyed.
Then the very first thing in installing the new granite countertop is to put down a strong plywood base, which will stay as a tough foundation. This will also give enough anchorage, which is far more than using cabinet sides and corner braces. So, after the old counter top is removed, edges are made at the back of the cabinet, corners and other parts where you have to place the stiff plywood.
Now you will have to use the cement tile backer board which is an adhesive, used behind the tile to fasten it to the surface. There is a new development in adhesives, known as Denshield, which is made of gypsum. The advantage of this is that it is light and does not absorb moisture, which makes it easy to fasten and cut. You will also need miterjig which is coupled to most of the tile saws; but it can be changed to fit with other tile saws.
When the tile base is ready, be patient enough to carefully lay down the tiles to work out the best looking top. It is advisable to start at the inside then gradually proceed to the countertop ends. This step is very important if it is done ahead of time to know the actual amount of tiles needed and to know the tiles that will be reshapened to fit into places that will not take normal tiles length and breadth.
When you have put all the tiles in place, apply the finishing touches to avoid any damage to the recently installed granite counter top. Like applying layers of grout sealants to put off grouting and shield your newly installed granite tiles.
